The Mockers - Somewhere Between Mocksville and Harmony - 1995

Though the Mockers have included a large cast of musicians hailing from all corners of the U.S. rock scene, the band's foundations were laid by two preteen Beatles fans living in Spain in the early '70s. Tony Leventhal and Seth Gordon were the children of New York expats living on the southern coast of Spain when they met. The third-graders quickly discovered their common love for rock & roll and formed a friendship that would last a lifetime. When their families eventually moved back to the States, both began learning guitar and keeping in touch regarding their plans to form their long-awaited rock band. Many years later the two converged in Virginia, creating the surf-pop band the Mockers. With a rotating cast of lead guitarists and drummers, the Mockers climbed their way to the top of the live music scene in Virginia. They spent the next several years touring tirelessly, sometimes playing as many as 20 engagements a month. As the band conquered the East Coast and Midwest, they earned the attention of the local press. Their relentless schedule began to wear thin, and the bandmembers took a long break to regain their creative spark. Some years later Leventhal and Gordon decided it was time for the Mockers to record their debut CD. The 1995 release Somewhere Between Mocksville and Harmony garnered excellent reviews, including a Billboard Critic's Choice Award. Ironically, the disc saw the greatest amount of airplay in Spain, resulting in heavy touring throughout the country and a reconnection with the boy's old stomping grounds. -AMG

Brimstone Howl

Enviado por Rafael a través de Google Reader:

vía Punks Make Your Day de Parasight el 13/09/09

Lincoln, Nebraska-based rockers Brimstone Howl take their garage rock seriously enough that ever since the stuff went mainstream thanks to the White Stripes, they've decided they don't much care for the term anymore. But they still play a Sixties-influenced blend of blues, beat and punk that's earned them a passionate following both at home and abroad. Built around a core lineup of Nick Waggoner (guitar and vocals), John Ziegler (guitar and vocals) and Calvin Retvlaff (drums), with a number of other musicians drifting in and out of the group, Brimstone Howl began life in 2002 under the name Caesar the Greaser, and they changed their moniker to the Zyklon Bees in 2004. Steady gigging in the Midwest led to a firm reputation as one of Nebraska's finest garage punk outfits, and the Zyklon Bees released their debut album, Seven Means Run, in 2005. However, the group's name (which referred to Zyklon B, the poison gas used in Nazi extermination camps during the Third Reich) attracted more controversy than it was worth, and the disc was later reissued under the group's new name, Brimstone Howl. Lots of live work led to second album, Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!, issued later the same year, and a fistful of seven-inch singles followed on a variety of small labels (including Blood On The Rocks, Blood In The River, produced and engineered by Jay Reatard.) Brimstone Howl hooked up with Alive Records for their third full-length album, Guts Of Steel, which arrived in stores in May 2007. We Came in Peace followed in 2008, also on Alive Records.

Texan-born Anglophile Micah P Hinson is set to return with two albums of covers, ‘All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers Vol 1 and 2’, which will be simultaneously released as separate discs on 28th September 2009. Micah is also set to play his first London headline show since 2008 at Cargo on the 15th September. Tickets are available from All Tomorrow’s Parties – Official Website

“I view the album as two independent projects,” says Hinson. “Volume one is the quieter, calmer songs, Volume two is much louder and loaded with many more instruments. They’re for different moods, different times; the ups and the downs.” ‘All Dressed Up’ follows on from 2008’s critically acclaimed album ‘…And The Red Empire Orchestra’.

The two volumes were recorded in Texas in bursts from November 2008 to March 2009 with regular collaborator T. Nicholas Phelps and cellist Kris Yoemans. Originally toying with numerous concepts and themes (songs from Texas, songs from the States and more), Hinson found that “the thing just wouldn’t fit into a confined space,” and so decided to keep the song choices simple. “The theme is that they all mean something to me; whether that be in the past or present. I feel very moved by songs and music of other men and women, it’s gotten me through many a hard time, so it made sense to find those songs and attempt to pull them off. “

As such, there’s a mixture of familiar and unknown, old and new, happy and sad. The album features covers from artists as diverse as Roy Orbison and Leadbelly to Pedro The Lion and Emmy The Great. The treatment in each case is not reverential, but loving, and unique to Micah and his distinct Texan burr.

“I knew that the only way it was to be any good was if I got the skeleton of each song down good, but focused on doing things the way I would do them and try not to think like the original musician. Knowing these songs in and out, I’m sure many of the arrangements bled over, but I did want to make each and every one of them my own in some way.”

An old-fashioned Texan trouble man with a history of minor crimes, drugs and jailtime, these are the songs that took Micah through the hard times, the wild times, and that shaped his world.

Today, Hinson’s life is well and truly back on track. Now married and living in Abilene, Texas, he records, tours, writes fiction and works part time in a comic shop with his buddy Larry. His next musical project is with a new band, Broken Arrows, whose debut album is currently being written and recorded. “I’m also working on, as always, my next full length record. I suppose I’ll try to have the bastard done by later this year. Got to always keep the monster going and alive. The shark ethic always prevails…”

The Avengers LP re-issued and they're touring again!

Enviado por Rafael a través de Google Reader:

vía 10 Things Zine de Dan 10Things el 1/09/09

I wrote a full article on old San Francisco punk band The Avengers last year back here. Needless to say, I've always been a fan of the band, in part because of Penelope Houston's kick ass sneering female vocals and in part because of her great lyrics that were often quite smart satirically. The band had only had a brief career from 1977-1979, probably the highlight was opening for the Sex Pistols. Most of their recorded material, including their LP, was released after the band broke up. I remember scoring the LP back in the late-'80s for a few bucks at a used record shop in Seattle's U-District. By the time the '90s rolled around it was out of print and fairly sought after. CD Presents, who put it out, also did a small run of CDs, which I picked up too.

Thanks to Lookout Records releasing a CD of outtakes and live tracks in 1999 and another label putting out a live Avengers CD in 2004, the band gained a lot of new fans and sparked the interest of their old ones. So much so that Penelope Houston decided to get the band back together for a handful of shows before continuing with her solo career.

Flash forward five years. It appears that someone finally wrangled the rights for the Avengers first LP out of the hands of CD Presents. Amazon now has the CD listed for presale and says it's being re-issued on September 22nd with a second CD:

"Though not released until 1983 the Avengers' self-titled record (aka The Pink Album) features the band's recorded output from 1977-78, from the glorious first wave of punk rock. The Avengers were San Francisco's preeminent punk band, led by Penelope Houston's snarling vocals and Greg Igranham's distorted guitar riffs, and one of the first anywhere to feature a female lead singer. Featuring a second CD of previously unreleased live and studio material."

Sweet! If you've never heard the band, check out their MySpace page. And it gets better for those of us on the West Coast, they are also touring! The Avengers will be playing Funhouse September 11th, this is a show not to be missed!

Here are the full tour dates:
Sep 11 2009, The Funhouse, Seattle, Washington
Sep 12 2009, Dante’s, Portland, Oregon
Sep 13 2009, Musichead Medford, Oregon
Sep 16 2009, Blue Lagoon, Santa Cruz, California
Sep 17 2009, The Uptown, Oakland, California
Sep 18 2009, Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco, California
Sep 19 2009, Galaxy Theatre, Santa Ana, California
Sep 20 2009, The Echo, Los Angeles, California

Teenage Lobotomy: The Spits - Vol.4 aka Schools Out (2009)

from RECESS
"A quote that proves to be eerily prescient with the long awaited return of professional weirdos, The SPITS. Fresh from the studio with their fourth self-titled LP on Thriftstore/Recess Records, The SPITS show no sign of slowing down with their latest effort, mixing equal parts Devo and Misfits into an aurally addictive, synth-inflected stew. Describing the music they play as “Punk for the People” these prophets of the proletariat have a message for the masses: The SPITS are the soundtrack to the Apocalypse."

The Intelligence Touch Down At Market Hotel Friday

Enviado por Rafael a través de Google Reader:

vía Victim of Time de Todd Killings el 10/09/09

Friday night in Brooklyn at the Market Hotel, don't miss the spectacle of sonic absurdity known as The Intelligence, as they again descend on New York's seedy underbelly with the unassuming finesse and unwavering sound pioneering, they're known for the world over. Originally a shard of the illustriously stark noise of the A-Frames, and manned by multi-instrumentalist / drummer extraordinaire, Lars Finberg, it was only a matter of time before The Intelligence commandeered that inimitable beat with those impeccable vocals to push this once-unknown side project into an unstoppable modern punk machine that never seems to run out of steam. As one of the most active recording acts on In The Red's roster, this year has already seen the release of a string of incredible singles on labels such as Raw Deluxe, Plastic Idol, and the Fake Surfers LP on ITR, along with another full LP released just weeks after on France's Born Bad Records, you could say that's a pretty good run for the first chunk of 2009.

With a murky yet brilliant style that engulfs your cloudy brain within seconds, The Intelligence readily prove that they're here to help deconstruct the years of indifference toward progressively minimal pop music, surgically implanting hooks where there used to be legs or eyeballs, and nonchalantly forging the template of modern noise-pop perfection, all in the process. Their live shows are getting even more intense as time passes, and the psycho-angular, other-worldly erratic rhythms that Lars ignites with that ungodly deadpan ferocity are as infectious as it gets, especially at the minimal end of the spectrum they've mastered so well. If you're still breathing, be sure to pick up copies of the latest LPs, Fake Surfers, and Crepuscule With Pacman and any other singles you can find with their name on it, as rest assured it's all top-notch quality, regardless of the endless quantity of releases.

Supporting The Intelligence are Brooklyn heathens Golden Triangle, who fall somewhere between experimental indie pop and primal garage-grunt goodness. Featuring Viva L'American Death Ray's Nick Diablo in the ranks, as well as Atlanta's Alix Brown (who's done time in Angry Angles and The Lids), it's got a clever randomness going on under the surface that's turning quite a few ears, and they've landed a deal with Hardly Art for their debut LP, slated to come out this Fall. Check out the 7" on Rob's House for a chunk of their best material, and keep your eyes on Golden Triangle to go somewhere big. Don't miss locals Wild Yaks and Olde Tyme Relijun's Arrington De Dionyso opening the show at the Market Hotel, as well.

Mission Of Burma – The Sound The Speed The Light [matador, 2009]

8. So Fuck It
9. Feed
10. Good Cheer
11. Come Undone
12. Slow Faucet
——————————————-

Recorded in Boston with Bob Weston at the controls, the record is a departure from the pinned-needles roar of 2006’s The Obliterati. The new album sounds far more spacious and dynamic. It is more or less divided into 4 sets or suites of 3 songs. Each suite explores a set of moods or colors, across the usual dizzying array of lyrical topics, from alcoholism to fleshly concerns. The anthemic, catchy opener, our first MP3, is a classic Burma rocker on a level with “This Is Not A Photograph” or “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate.” Other tracks, such as “Feed,” “Forget Yourself,” and “Slow Faucet,” the latter a live favorite for some time, are slow, hypnotic builders. “Good Cheer” is a burst of almost uncontainable joy and fun that literally explodes from the speakers.

Of course, all the Burma trademarks are also present: the military snare drum, the melodic basslines high up on the neck, and the furiously experimental guitarwork, refracted and changed back into the songs via tape loops – all punctuated by the hoarse shouts of drummer Peter Prescott. This controlled chaos, this disciplined letting go, is the heart of what they do and it remains as exhilarating and fulfilling as ever.

36 Days of Gonerfest: Monsieur Jeffrey Evans

Monsieur Jeffrey Evans has become such an integral part of the Memphis scene that it’s sometimes hard to remember that he once wielded his guitar as co-frontman for the Columbus, Ohio-based Homestead recording artists the Gibson Bros. Yet it’s with his phenomenal triple guitar attack post-GB group, ‘68 Comeback (with Gories drummer Peggy O’Neill originally [...]
