Deranged Records » September Update

STORE – Recently added a number of interesting items to the online store including the European only BRUTAL KNIGHTS total rebellion 12”, v/a KILLED BY TRASH LP volume 2 (with fucked up and vicious cycle), SEDATIVES LP European pressing, SUSPECT PARTS maneater 7”, three new MARVELOUS DARLINGS 7”, new STATUES 7”, URBAN BLIGHT 12”, GORILLA ANGREB disco LP, SLICES 7”.  MATURE SITUATION 1st 7” and FAILURES 7” should be here next week.

FUCKED UP FU is once again doing their annual 3 day bash around Halloween.  Other Deranged affiliated bands on the bill include NOMOS, MATURE SITUATIONS, URBAN BLIGHT, and BRUTAL KNIGHTS.  As usual, expect a few unexpected surprises.

GUILTY FACES review from MRR #317, also made a few top tens  ‘GUILTY FACES’ sound comes close to an amalgam of the REPLACEMENTS’ songwriting and the rhythmic punch of the WIPERS – and , of course,  ADOLESCENTS in the insistent vocals.  This debut LP contains ten songs in a medium-fast speed, but with a definite hardcore energy, which gives a sharper edge to nearly every song.  Not every tune is distinctive, but the rockin’ sound is insistent and convincing.  A nice follow-up to GUILTY FACES’ 7”, and definitely above the norms.’

BRAIN KILLER review from MRR #317, also made many top tens ‘Don’t know if I can top Bruce’s review of BRAIN KILLER’s debut 7”.  Actually, I’m not even gonna try!  There’s been a considerable “buzz” around this band, so perhaps many people are by now familiar with them.  For those who aren’t, BRAIN KILLER is a top-notch fusion of DEVOID OF FAITH style USHC and JAPANESE bands like BASTARD and FRAMTID.  It’s noisy and very powerful, and they manage to capture the same level of sonic power live. Definitely one of the better, if not best , records I’ve heard this year.

NOMOS If you haven’t ordered this 7” yet, not sure what you are waiting for.  It absolutely rips.

SEDATIVESHere is a track from their s/t album

VICIOUS CYCLEreview of Pale Blue Dot from Canada’s Much Music  “It’s probably just best to get it out of the way: George Petit of Alexisonfire and Damien “Pink Eyes” Abraham of F**ked Up appear on the debut album from Sudbury’s Vicious Cycle. Try your hardest and you might pinpoint their cameos, but doing that would detract from the band’s own savage rumpus. With producer Jonah Falco (also of F**ked Up) at the boards, Vicious Cycle use ’80s hardcore, proto-punk and Motorhead as their origins, but they’re careful to challenge themselves by breaking free from the usual hardcore trappings. “In Tranquility,” a fired-up punk’n’roll anthem and “Blur,” some straight-up hardcore are examples of what they dp best. But the strenuous momentum is broken up by “Death,” two minutes of scrawling guitar noise, and even more of a surpise, “For Carl,” some dour post-punk that demonstrates there’s much more to this band than meets the eye. Rating: A-  “

WHITE LUNGA new guitarist has been located and they expect to start playing shows again soon.  The recording of the album has been postponed a few months and should be expected early next year.

This week, we’re taking a look at the Left Coast invasion scheduled to hit Memphis at the end of the month. First up: Bay Area greats Thee Oh Sees, returning after both a captivating performance at Gonerfest V and a summer 2009 opening slot on the road with Jay Reatard (who pressed a split seven-inch [...]

36 Days of Gonerfest: The Intelligence

It makes perfect sense to follow up a post on Thee Oh Sees with one on the Intelligence, who will return to Memphis for their second Gonerfest in a row, hitting the stage at the Hi-Tone Cafe on Friday, Sept. 24. Although the Intelligence hail from Seattle, both no-wave bands are on the In the [...]

GonerBlog » 36 Days of Gonerfest: Nobunny

Wearing a matted fur mask and oftentimes, little else, Nobunny proves the Ramones axiom of rock-and-roll: The more basic the chords, the better the sound.

The Tucson-born, Bay Area-relocated rabbit (reputedly the alter-ego of Okmoniks/Sneaky Pinks/Hunx And His Punx member Justin Champlin) is playing the Hi-Tone on Saturday night at midnight.

We’re thrilled to welcome these Puerto Rican rockers back to Memphis for Gonerfest VI! Davila 666 — named for a Bayoman city slum — take the stage at the Hi-Tone on Friday, Sept. 25th.

Straight from vocalist Carlito Davila: “Davila is a living homage to the sex, drugs, and good times of rock ‘n’ roll we all idolize. We are like Menudo on lots of drugs.”

Vinyl out now on In the Red, Douchemaster, and HoZac.

36 Days of Gonerfest: Girls of the Gravitron

Lo-fi indie rock-meets-psychedelia-meets-folk-meets-punk-meets-garage rock in the Memphis-based (and all-boy) Girls of the Gravitron. A supergroup of sorts — formed by Pop Dungeon denizens/members of the Barbaras and Kazalok — weirdly combine acoustic guitars and feedback — and it works! The folks at Ongakubaka blog aptly describe the Girls’ debut 7-inch, “Malthusian Love Song” (Boom Chick), as [...]

i can't believe i've neglected writing about them: the demon's claws

i came across these guys in about 2006 then got to see them play at the last hozac blackout, also in 2006. they decimated me. this is closest thing i can think of to describing how they play: once i was hiking in the mountains around here and i was pretty high up and i was near a gravel slide and decided i wanted to take a short cut down. so i started making my way down this gravel slide and didn't realize how steep it was so i either had to slide down on my ass or run. since ruining a pair of jeans wasn't appealing i decided to run, and it wasn't so much running as it was giant leaps with no control. i was going so fast that each "step" was about ten feet apart. and there was no slowing down, and i was simultaneously in and out of control, and it was totally beyond my control. that's what i think of when i listen to the demons claws, once they start they can't control what happens. they're some of those folks who continue to prove sound is a physical force. i've been listening to their records over and over again the past few days. i kinda get stuck on their latest lp, "satans little pet pig", and have slowly realized i really want to rip off every song they do. i'm fine with that.

please head over to the nearest wrong side of town:

entrevista MARCO Ghost Highway Recordings (Espanha)

[por Joe Strume]

Hoje ROCK-de-PLÁSTICO traz uma entrevista internacional!
São nossos primeiros “wild friends around the world”!!!

Quem diz é o nosso entrevistado, Marco, a figura à frente dessa empreitada toda.

Deus? que Deus? o Deus do Rock'k'Roll? Elvis? Lux Interior?

estos son os lanzamentos ata agora;
GHR-01: JACK OBLIVIAN & The Cigarillos - "Drinking Wome's Milk" / "15 Beers" >> SOLD OUT
GHR-02: MUNLET: "Perturbadora de Mentes" / "Turismo Extremo"
GHR-03: Tribute To The OBLIVIANS Vol. 1: Las NURSES: "Bum A Ride" / Los IDIOTAS: " She's A Hole"

Proximamente:

check them on myspace.com/ghosthighwayrecordings

Tamen voy a sacar un vinilo a 7" a Walter Daniels & The Gospel Clodhoppers que é unha superbanda formada por grandes músicos como;
Walter Daniels (Jack O'Fire, Big Foot Chester, South Filthy,...): harp, vocals
John Schooley (The Revelators, Hard Feelings,...): slide guitar
Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers, Honky,...): banjo bass
Trey Robles (Hard Feelings, The Yuppie Pricks, Tempo Tantrums,...): drums, luggage
Ralph White (Bad Livers, Golden Boys,...): fiddle
Texacala Jones (Tex & The Horseheads, Los Platos,...): vocals

Pretendem fazer algum outro tributo do tipo?

Tribute To The OBLIVIANS. Vol. 1 > LAS NURSES: "Bum A Ride" / LOS IDIOTAS: "She's A Hole"
Tribute To The OBLIVIANS. Vol. 2 > HOLLYWOOD SINNERS: "Pinstripe Willie" / ASANO HISTORICAL SOCIETY: "Show Me What You Like"
